In an effort to showcase various ways that Instructional Technology has integrated technology in the classroom, Jason, Courtney and I will be posting examples of projects we’ve worked on with classes and faculty.
The first example I’d like to share is iMovie. iMovie is an easy-to-use video editing tool, which is available in the iLife suite of applications. I’ve worked with several classes on iMovie projects, and find it to be a great choice for simple to intermediate-level projects.
In the Fall ’10 semester, I worked with 8 sections of John Drummond’s BIOL101 class; they were tasked with creating 4-5 minute videos using iMovie to represent the processes of mitosis and meiosis. A 50-minute workshop was held for each class, where we taught students how to do the following with iMovie:
- Combining still images and video clips within a timeline
- Transitions/effects
- Ken Burns effect for still images
- Lower Thirds/Titles
- Adding background music and voiceovers
- Scrubbing/previewing movies
- Exporting movie to YouTube
- Posting YouTube clip to BIOL101 WordPress site
Below is an example of an impressive time-lapse demonstration of cell meiosis and mitosis- if you’re interested in additional examples, they can be found on the BIOL101 Class Website.
